treatment goals HCV and HIV Jan 13, 2005 Hi Doctor: Please help us understand the difference.. In HCV treatment, the goal seems to be to get HCV viremia to undetectable which is equivalent to a cure. In HIV the goal is to get viremia to undetectable, which is not a cure, but better prognosis. Why can HCV be "knocked out" and HIV not "knocked out"? |

 Yes, hepatitis C virus can be eradicated with medications because it does not cross into the nucleus of the host cell and insert its own genetic material into the DNA like HIV does. This "Trojan horse" attribute of HIV is why cure is not yet within our grasp. | ||||||||
