Response from Dr. Pierone
Gancyclovir for CMV disease in the HAART era is primarily a short to intermediate term treatment to bring CMV (and attendant wasting) under control. Generally when HAART is begun (or the HAART regimen optimized) and the immune system reconstitutes this allows the gancyclovir to be stopped. Before we had effective therapy it was not uncommon for our patients to receive gancyclovir as a lifelong regimen. | |||||||||
