| Your views on Re-mune? Jan 24, 2000 I might have been cut off so i'm sending again. I would like to know your personal views on Re-mune. I am thinking about enrolling in a trial. (I am on anti-virals presently.) Thank You, Mark |

Response from Dr. Pavia
Mark, Remune is a promising drug whose promise is not yet realized. There are two main pieces of data. One is a small trial led by Dr. Valentine from New York that compared starting "HAART" alone with HAART plus Remune. There was no major difference in viral suppression but the patients who added Remune had much more vigorous immune responses to HIV in the test tube. However, in conflict with that are the results of a large 3 year study led by Jim Kahn that looked at patients with HIV on treatment who received either Remune or placebo. There were no differences in clinical outcome or survival. The limitation of this trial is that it started back in the days of monotherapy and continued into the modern era, so it may be very different than the questions we would ask now. I don't think Remmune can hurt, and there is a reasonable chance that it can "remind" your immune system to keep fighting HIV while you are on active antiviral therapy. I think the trials are worth doing and I would give it strong consideration. ATP | |||
