CBS website on HIV
Nov 14, 2004
On the new CBS HIV website, there are really interesting interviews with Dr. HO and Fauci who say a lot about treatments and new drugs. Seems like new kinds of drugs could be available within 5 years and even Fuzeon could be in pill form someday. Do you agree with this?
Response from Dr. Young
I do agree with the very highly respected Drs. Ho and Fauci in that the drug discovery pipeline has many promising new drugs and new treatments. While enfuvirtide (T-20, Fuzeon) itself won't likely ever be available in a pill, there are orally bioavailable compounds (read: pill) in varying stages of research that act by inhibiting similar steps of the virus.
Predicting which experimental compounds make it all the way to be approved as drugs will remain to be seen, but I expect improved drugs (particularly for the treatment of drug resistant HIV) in the near- or intermediate-term future.
