What is the Latest?
Feb 22, 2000

I was diagnosed + about 6 months now! I am feeling fine, I am not sick or anything like that. I have been keeping an eye out for current treatments and strategies to fight this virus. I am curious as to how close or how far are the researchers from finding a cure or a vaccine which will allow for a + person to have a relationship without the fear of infecting the other person. I have read a lot but I was wondering if there were some procedures in the works or something the millions of us can look forward to. I am extremely grateful to you all. You keep me encouraged and hope alive. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Response from Dr. Squires

It is good to hear that you do not have any symptoms but it is very important for you to establish the stage of your infection to determine if you need therapy now or can safely monitor it off treatment. Our current understanding of the pathogenesis of this infection is that it is a chronic infection; there is no evidence that we can cure this viral infection. The role of vaccines in established infection is being studied to determine if a vaccine can augment the patient's immune response to the virus, not as a possible cure. There is data to suggest that the better the infection is controlled the lower the risk of transmitting HIV, however, safe sexual practices should be used at all times since the risk is not reduced to zero.

As you allude to, there is much research going on on many fronts. I would encourage you to ascertain whether it is appropriate to wait for the results of these studies or to start therapy now.

I hope that this has been helpful.
