Response from Dr. Squires
HIV-2 shares many of the same characteristics as HIV-1 but is not as cytopathic (toxic to human cells). It can cause AIDS but does so much more slowly than HIV-1. It is found almost exclusively in a restricted area of West Africa. Many of the drugs that are active against HIV-1 also have activity against HIV-2 but I do not believe that there have been clinical trials that have specifically included HIV-2 infected individuals so there is little data available about the use of these agents in this patient population. Hope that this has been helpful. KES | |||
