HIV 2 TREATMENT
Feb 28, 2000

I would like to know the percentage of progression

of hiv2 compared to hiv1.Also the life expectancy ,and if

all the medicines of hiv1 are applicable for hiv2.

Response from Dr. Squires

HIV-2 shares many of the same characteristics as HIV-1 but is not as cytopathic (toxic to human cells). It can cause AIDS but does so much more slowly than HIV-1. It is found almost exclusively in a restricted area of West Africa. Many of the drugs that are active against HIV-1 also have activity against HIV-2 but I do not believe that there have been clinical trials that have specifically included HIV-2 infected individuals so there is little data available about the use of these agents in this patient population.

Hope that this has been helpful.
