Preserving liver function on medication
Jun 21, 2004
What is the best starting treatment for patients wanting to perserve their liver functions?
Response from Dr. Pierone
All HIV medications have potential liver toxicity. The two that are differentiated with higher rates of liver side effects are nevirapine (Viramune) and ritonavir (Norvir). One caveat is that the liver toxicity data pertains to high dose Norvir which is almost never used anymore. We typically use Norvir in lower doses now to boost levels of other protease inhibitors and used in this manner it does not appear to increase rates of liver toxicity.
