Uncertain about starting meds with high CD4
Jun 8, 2004
My CD4 count is 600 and viral load is 100,000. My doctor is suggesting that i consider starting medications to bring my viral load down. From what I have read on various websites, my high CD4 count and high viral load count place me in "limbo" insofar as medication. What would you recommend?
Response from Dr. Pierone
Unless you are having symptoms or particularly desire to start medications, the formal guidelines would suggest that you hold off on treatment. There are trials of early treatment (BASTA in Europe, SMART in the United States) that may answer this question of how best to treat HI V infection. In the meanwhile, we suggest holding off since we don't have proof that the risks of early treatment outweigh the benefits.
