hcv viral load
Apr 25, 2004

i was recently diagnosed w/hep-c. i was told i have 30 million per one c c. how severe is that and what is my next step? very frightening, please help.

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your question.

Typically, the next step for persons with positive HCV viral loads is to talk you your doctor about three major topics- HCV genotype (since this affects your likelihood of responding to treatment), liver biopsy (affects how soon to start treatment), and lastly when and if to start treatments. A HCV viral load is typically higher than an HIV viral load.

HCV disease is typically a very slowly progressive disease. There is usually plenty of time to make these decisions, and many persons elect (with their doctors) not to start treatment immediately.

Good luck, BY
