| Just diagnosed, what to do now? Mar 28, 2004 Hi Everyone. I was just diagnosed and am very in the dark about everything. I feel healthy and am fairly young, what do you think I should do right now? Start preventative treatment? Get more tests? I'm clueless. Please help me, can I wait 7 weeks before I take any action or will I be hurting myself? Thank you for your info. |

Response from Dr. Young
Thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear about your situation and diagnosis. Know that HIV is usually a slow moving, chronic infection. So waiting a few weeks usually won't cause any problems, so long as your otherwise feeling well. The most important thing for you right now is to learn about your disease and medical options-- most important is to find a healthcare provider with HIV experience. I'd look to your local AIDS service organization (often found in the yellow pages, but also can be found at www.asofinder.com) for the inside scoop on who's good and not in your city. I typically would want to see a repeat set of labs (and include drug resistance testing in everone who's recently diagnosed) before drawing conclusions about preventive therapies. Good luck, stay in touch. BY | |||
