| Re: Events often not aids related? Jan 19, 2004 referring back to the message "Events often not aids related?", in it, it is stated that something like 670 out of 3,000 people on HAART experienced a serious illness. what does the data show about 3,000 hiv positive people NOT on HAART? would more than 670 manifest a serious illness in the same timeframe as those on HAART? is there any clinical data to back that up (if you assert it is the case)? |

Response from Dr. Wohl
There is really no question that in gauging the benefits versus the problems of HAART that it is not 'a wash'. You need only look to the CDC data on the rates of death due to HIV over the past 2 decades (www.cdc.gov). It looks like a camel's back and the top of the hump is at 1994-5, when better therapies for HIV became available. Death is the worst AIDS-associated 'illness' and HAART can prevent it - but not forever. Other illnesses can develop as can drug related toxicity. On the whole, the scales tip deeply in favor of HAART. Honest. Thanks. DW | |||||||||
