CAD patient
Nov 24, 2003

Dear Sir,

I ama CAD patient and waiting for CABG, and was looking for a medicine to remove the block. Now day has come etc-216 is intruduced. Can I go for it and avoid surgery.

Response from Dr. Pierone

ETC-216 is the synthetic form of HDL cholesterol produced by Esperion. Recent phase 2 studies showed that intravenous infusion of this molecule led to improvement of coronary artery plaque in patients with a recent heart attack.

In order to be approved this drug will need to go through phase 3 testing (which will take 2-3 years typically). Discuss options with your cardiologist to see what can be done before bypass. It is not uncommon to find strategies to delay or avoid surgery through aggressive medical management of coronary artery disease. But this depends on the specifics of your case and for some people CABG surgery is imperative (severe triple vessel disease or left main coronary artery for example). Best of luck!
