HB Core AB, Total
When this comes out poitive what does it mean?
| Response from Dr. Aberg
The first thing you need to know is what did your other Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) tests show? We check HBV core antibody total in conjunction with other tests to see whether one has chronic HBV infection or immunity. For example, if your HBV surface antibody was positive as well as your core, that would mean that you were previously exposed to HBV and now have immunity.
Some people are core antibody positive only with both HBV surface antigen and surface antibody negative. The vast majority of people with this pattern do not have chronic HBV infection but there have been case series demonstrating that some of these people did have low levels of HBV detectable in their blood. This is usually a mild infection and usually does not cause progressive disease.
I recommend that you ask your provider what the other HBV tests showed and ask him or her for an interpretation. If you would like more help, e-mail back with all the results.
