why isnt combivir reformulated?

Nov 6, 2003

Dr. Young,

It seems that combivir is one of the most common prescribed medications out there. What is confusing however is why the medication isn't reformulated to or upgraded to take away the troublesome side effects as anemia, vomiting, headaches, and lipoatrophy. Why not?

Response from Dr. Young

Monty- The reason that Combivir (AZT/3TC) is not "reformulated" is because for most persons, these side effects are intrinsic to the AZT part of the drug.

A better way to look at your question, is that side effects of drugs are the reason why the pharmaceutical industry develops new products.

In a way, this is why there are efforts to develop other coformulated products (like abacavir/3TC or tenofovir/FTC). BY
