|why do they do this??

Why is it that this new "lipoatrophy" craze in HIV research has caused HIV specialists to totally disregard actual muscle wasting? Someone can complain of facial wasting, and the very first thing the Dr. discusses is "lipoatrophy." This is ridiculous. HIV wasting is, and has always been, primarily loss of muscle mass. Losing fat close to the skin brings out muscle striation, sure, but it is not what it causing bodies to change shape (not talking about lipodystrophy) and it is not the reason peoples' faces are being "pushed back" and "burned down." I only hope this crap comes to an end soon, and we can refocus our efforts on combatting muscle deterioration. Facial wasting has MUCH more to do with loss of facial muscle than loss of facial fat. How could you guys not know something so simple???

From all I have read and heard, facial wasting is indeed the loss of fat from the Bichat fat pad of the cheeks. Muscle wasting is not commonly a part of the so called lipoatrophy syndrome.
