im sorry the oral health and hiv dosent take questions. I am hiv posative, is it safe to get my tongue peirced and is there risk of it becoming infected because im posative?
Response from Dr. Young
As an infectious disease physician, I'm not a big fan of oral piercings because I have seen some pretty serious infectious complications (but then again, I see plenty of other types of infections, because it's my job).
Several of my patients have tongue piercings, so it can't be all bad; and I am not aware of any reports of significantly increased risk of piercings among persons with HIV.
So where do this leave you? If your otherwise healthy and have an intact (or high) CD4 cell count, then your risk is probably low. On the other hand, if you have AIDS or a very low CD4, I'd advise you to wait. BY
