| RE: CAN WE DO IT?? Sep 8, 2003 Hi Dr. Young, So with all the new data coming out in recent months and all the new technology re: genetic sciences you really don't believe that we will have a cure or vaccine that can erradicate HIV from the body?? Why was it possible to find a vaccine for a retrovirus in horses but you see no hope for one for humans?? |

Response from Dr. Young
Firstly, I do really believe what I write (otherwise, I wouldn't write it, right?). There have been tremendous strides in our understanding of HIV immunology-- the preliminary data that suggests that a preventive vaccine (using live retrovirus) to protect horses from infection with a horse retrovirus (equine infectious anemia virus) is very encouraging, and gives hope for a protective vaccine for HIV as well. So there is hope--for a preventive vaccine. Read on. The previous post did not ask about protective vaccines (ones that prevent infection), but rather curative vaccines (ones that eliminate virus from already infected individuals). This is a much more challenging task, and neither the equine nor human data would suggest that this is likely to happen anytime in the near future. BY | |||||||||
