initial resistance

Aug 17, 2003

My doc wants me to begin meds now. VL is 79,000 and CD4s are 317. Should I ask for a resistance test before I decide upon a regimen. I am treatment naive, but it occurs to me that the virus I picked up may already be resistant to some meds.

Response from Dr. Young

Yes, I would ask for a resistance test.

Recent guidelines from the International AIDS Society-USA and the Department of Health and Human Services (USA) recommend testing for persons who are treatment naive, irrespective of when they were infected.

There are recent US-based studies that show, on average, nearly 5% of newly recognized cases of HIV infection have some evidence of drug resistance, clearly, knowing which drugs that won't work for your (if any) would be very important. BY
