do some people remain undetectible viral loads yet test poz for hiv without ever having taken meds? if so, how common/uncommon is this?

Response from Dr. Wohl

Yes, this happens. Such persons are often described as 'long term non-progressors'. It is rare (less than 5%) of HIV infected persons. I have seen only a few in my practice and they almost always do great with no drop in CD4 counts.

How are these people different from all others with HIV? Good question and one that many feel will help inform future interventions to fight HIV. The immune systems of these folks seem better able to fight and control HIV. This and other genetic influences and possibly the type of HIV they were infected with are factors theorized to explain these individuals' good fortune. DW
