please help me

May 29, 2003

I can't find acute hiv infection treatment in Knoxville, Tn. I'm about 8 weeks along. I've tried the health department's aids clinic, private practice, aids hotlines. I have no insurance. Please tell me where to go before it's too late.

Response from Dr. Young

It would seem to me that any of the above places would be reasonable to access care for acute HIV infection. The key thing is to get the appropriate testing to verify this situation-- that is to say, have both HIV antibody and viral load testing performed.

No one would start treatment until the acute infection was verified by having a positive viral load and indeterminate, or negative antibody (ELISA) test.

Good luck. BY
