delta 32 gene mutation info
Mar 12, 2003
hi i have asked this question a few times on the website but not in this catagory. maybe i will get a response from you. i wanted to know where a person could get tested to see if they have this delta 32 gene mutation, which according to this PBS program i saw, made individuals with this mutation immune to hiv infection. my son's father is hiv and hep c +; my son and i are neg for both. Please answer or point me in the right direction. it would put my mind at ease regarding my sons' future. thank you a very anxious mom
Response from Dr. Young
There are a couple of commercial labs that offer testing for HIV receptor polymorphisms (like delta 32)-- you might be able to ask your doctor to order these tests.
Assuming that your son is HIV negative, then this already is the most important piece of information about your son's risk (or lack thereof). The key counsel then is to learn about risk reduction (sex, drugs, etc).
Good luck. BY
