Interesting news about AZT
Oct 26, 2002

http://www.cafezine.com/news_template.asp?Id=620&deptid=8

"AZT (Retrovir), a key component in both of GSK's current best- selling AIDS medications. Burroughs neither invented AZT (which was first created in 1964 as a possible cancer drug), "

I was shocked to see in the article that AZT was not specifically searched and discovered for HIV treatment.

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for the observation.

The fact is that many of the nucleoside analogs were first developed as possible cancer drugs. A large library of candidate compounds are often screened for activity against new targets, like viruses. This is, by the way, how we have discovered drugs with activity against herpes viruses and hepatitis B. BY
