drug resistance
Oct 6, 2002

hi: just a question regarding drug resistance. i just read the oct. issue of scientific american, and they said most people develop drug resistance after two years?!

the article also says that if the drugs fail to reduce viral load below 50 particles per cubic millimeter, then resistance is inevitable. i felt pretty down after reading this. what's your guys take on this? thanks.

Response from Dr. Young

Drug resistance is a very real concern for the HIV community. If sustained viral replication occurs in the presence of non-suppressive drug therapy, drug resistance is nearly guaranteed.

This speaks to the need to have good access to medical information and potent antiretroviral therapy. With these concerns however, it is very important to recognize that many persons have been on successful, well tolerated combination therapy, since the beginning of the HAART era. How long this will last is unknown, but I think that this cup is more than half full rather than half emptly. -BY
