Dr. Young, In your opinion are HAART medications making HIV a chronic disease rather than a fatal one. Ive heard from other doctors that HIV is now chronic and was just wondering your opinion?
Response from Dr. Young
I believe that with a certain bit of luck and an awful amount of hard work and perseverence (including access to qualified medical counsel and access to medications), that HIV can be managed as a chronic illness.
This is not to say that chronic illnesses are totally benign, or do not require medications, nor that persons with chronic illness do not sometimes die of their illnesses-- indeed, many persons, even with all good access and adherence, still die of HIV-related complications.
Nor does this statement reflect the horror of the situation for those in the developing world, where limited resources, social stigma and governmental inaction have failed to provide even minimal medical care for those with HIV infection. - BY
