Confused-should I be treated?
Mar 25, 2002

Hello, I am writing from Canada. My doctor talked to me about peginterferon which should be approved here in a short while. I am 36 years old, female. 18 years ago, got very very sick from non-hep A or B. I have been officially diagnostic chronical Hep C years ago. My liver biopsy says extremely minor scar and all my blood tests are ok. I do not know my genotype or my viral load. Because it's been a long time I have this virus , and because of my age, should I try to get ride of this thing, or should I just go on with my life? If so, should I get second opinion and re-do all the tests? After 18 years, what are my changes of having cancer soon? Thanks a great lot, I am a bit confused and tired of always thinking about all this.

Response from Dr. Dieterich

It sounds like if you are always thinking about it you should do something about it. Your chances of a cure are quite good because of your young age and female sex and lack of serious biopsy changes. There good evidence that your quality of life will also change for the better after the virus is gone. Go for it! DTD
