Just found out im HIV
Mar 16, 2002

I just found out I am HIV, I'm 15 and so scared. Im in foster care and dont dare tell them incase they dont want me, I also have a 17 yr old girlfriend and I dont know how to tell her im HIV. How do I do such a thing and is there anywhere where my girlfriend and i can go together to get advice if she will? I know hardly anything about HIV! :(

Response from Dr. Young

I am sorry to hear about your case; but I'd strongly recommend that you continue to ask questions about HIV; get clinical and lab evaluations to check on your health status.

I would emplore you to tell your family; definately tell your girlfriend about your status, at least before you have sexual intercourse (if you are). At the risk of being frank, this means oral, vaginal and rectal intercourse, since all are associated with risk of infection. Remember, condoms can and do prevent infection.

There are likely to be local AIDS service organizations or advocacy groups that can help counsel you and your girlfriend about the disease and safe sex.

Good luck, let us know how you're doing. BY
