| viread Mar 13, 2002 Docs, I have been holding off on starting treatment (scared of side effects). My doctor says it is time to start thinking about meds. It sounds like viread is the most promising drug around? Is it good to start on? TK |

Response from Dr. Young
Tenofovir is the most recently approved HIV medication. It appears to be very potent and well tolerated. There is only limited data yet on the drug's long-term efficacy and potency among treatment naive persons. Given that we have many long-term studies that demonstrate excellent efficacy of other drugs, I currently don't use tenofovir frequently among treatment naives. I try as much a possible to practice evidence-based medicine and wait for studies to confirm what seems to make good initial sense. There are certainly some circumstances where the drug could be used as a first line agent-- for example in cases where low pill count or once daily regimens are important. Another setting where the drug might be used earlier than the studies mature would be in persons infected with drug-resistant virus. BY | |||
