| Is Fortovase strong enough? Jun 8, 1998 Is Fortovase strong enough to be used as the only PI in a regimen with two other nukes? Can I get and stay undetectable on such a regimen. |

Response from Dr. Cohen
There have been several studies that answer your question, and the answer is a defininte yes. It has been shown from several studies that Fortovase, which is an improved reformulation of saquinavir, has a similar success rate as compared to the other PIs, in getting you to undetectable when combined with two nukes. We are now involved in a large study to look at giving this PI just two times a day, as compared to what was done in those studies where it was given three times a day, and we will be presenting this at the meeting in Geneva in a month or so. So that information could be helpful to you, as it could make Fortovase more convenient as well. Check back in a month for an update on this. And while it is a bit higher in terms of the number of pills you need to take each day to get the full amount, it has been both successful in controlling HIV as well as generally pretty low in side effects, based on my own experience. hope that helps.
