is this a good news

Oct 1, 2010

Dear Dr. Is this a really a big news for people who have just be infected like us please help i hope it is really a good news and gods blessing for us. Please advise.

Israeli researchers have developed a new treatment for HIV that kills human cells infected with the virus and could lead to a breakthrough in treating AIDS, the Haaretz newspaper said on Fri

Response from Dr. McGowan

Thank you for the reference.

The report by Israeli scientists in the Bristish Journal AIDS Research and Therapy ( describes work to try to eliminate the residual viral genes that remain inside infected cells once the virus in the blood has been suppressed by combination treatment. The reason that we cannot "cure" HIV even though we have medicines that are very effective at suppressing the infection and killing the virus is that the virus inserts a copy or 2 of its genes into the chromosome of our CD4 T cells. Once infected it can lie dormant in those cells for if you ever let the lid off by stopping medicines the virus will "wake up" from these cells and set off the entire infection again in the blood.

The idea of this study was to use new treatments that could potentially work to target the remaining infected cells in a person who has achieved undetectable viral load on meds by forcing multiple copies of the HIV gene into the chromosme (not just the usual 1 or 2). This massive insertion of HIV genes would "destabilize" the cell and lead to its death.

This work has only just begun and it would be important that it be persued and tested for safety and full effectiveness but seems to hold some promise. It make take a few years before it passes all the tests needed for treatment. In the meantime it is best to keep HIV suppressed on meds so that if/when this becomes available you will be ready!

Best, Joe
