Dr. Young: Given the recent significant advances in hiv treatment options, are you aware of any clinics worldwide that are current offering either stem cell transplants or gene therapy for hiv treatment? Further, in your opinion,is gene/stem cell therapy a viable solution for hiv treatment?
Response from Dr. Young
Hello and thanks for your post.
Stem-cell transplantation and gene therapy remain in the very early investigational stage and are not currently approved (nor proven effective) for the treatment of persons living with HIV. As such, the only clinics where such strategies are available are in the research setting.
For now, I would not consider these investigational studies as a therapeutic substitute for proven combination antiretroviral treatments.
I hope this helps. Be well, BY
