I am a male with HIV - does this mean I can never have children?

It is possible for a male with HIV to have children. Several things have to be considered including: the HIV status of your female partner (if she is negative she will have to take medicine to prevent acquiring HIV), the viral load of HIV in your blood and semen (sometimes HIV can be present in the semen even when the blood is undetectable), and testing to determine the ovulation cycle of the woman to reduce unneccessary exposure. Most groups use artificial insemination, and "sperm washing" has been used as well.
You should talk with your medical provider. Usually you will need a referral to a fertility center to do the sperm washing and in vitro fertilization. In New York City there is a well established group at Columbia Presbyterian (Dr Sauer), their number is 646-756-8282.
