CD4 Origins
Apr 16, 2009

Where do CD4s come from? Are we born with all the CD4s we will ever have? Or does our body have the ability to make new CD4s.

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for your post.

CD4 cells are derived from precursor cells-- another way to say this is that our bodies have the ability to make new CD4 cells. The issue is that HIV tends to kill more CD4s than our body makes, so over time, the CD4 cell count declines.

Hope this helps, BY
