Now I'm freaked out
May 17, 2008
I started out my regimen with Viramune, Epivir and Viread. Then my doctor switched me to Truvada and Viramune about 1 year into my treatment. I have been on this regimen for over 4 years and have steadily remained undetectable with a current CD4 of 486, I started with 48. I keep reading all this negative info about my regimen. Am I more likely to have a failure on this regimen than others. I know my doctor was trying to get me on something quickly that he thought would produce few or no side effects for me. The doctor was not only an HIV specialist, he is also HIV positive.
Response from Dr. Young
Thanks for your post.
If you've been doing well and have had undetectable viral loads for 4 years on your current regimen, I can see little risk in staying on.
The issue with failure that I had previously mentioned has to do with the risk for persons starting a new regimen. That analysis is entirely different than the situation for persons who have been successfully suppressed.
I hope this helps,
