Price of HIV Drugs
May 10, 2008

Hi!

I recently heard about free HIV drugs in the Washington DC area. Unfortunately, I think I don't qualify for receiving these drugs because my parents earn more than is allowed in the program and I don't have a way to live alone now. My problem is, I have aetna, but I don't want them to find out about anything. They are religious... and resuming, they would not to like to live in the same house of somebody infected. I don't have 10.000 a year to spend in the drugs... Is there another way to pay for it?

Thank you for your help.

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your medications.

If you've been paying for private health insurance, I don't see any reason (other than to save the poor insurance industry from loses) to take full advantage of the benefits that you've been paying hard currency for.

Your parent's income shouldn't affect your eligibility for patient assistance programs, but your Aetna coverage certainly will (as will your income).

If you have any doubts or questions about the confidentiality of your insurance plan, I'd talk to your doctor or case manager.

Lastly, religious or not, I advise my patients to eventually find the time and space to disclose their HIV status to close family. It's a shame that you feel like you'd have to leave the house rather than tell your parents about your health situation.

Best of luck, BY
