Purpura
Apr 28, 2008

I have been + for about 4 years, my CD4 and V. Load has been very stable (350, 2 to 3,000 respectively). I am not under therapy.

I got diagnosed with purpura, the level of my plalettes has gone down to 20,000. I am taking medication for it.

I was told that the main reason for the level to go down is due to the virus.

My doctor is suggesting to start therapy.

I just want to know if with those levels of CD4 and VL, I really need to start therapy? Can I do something else?

Regards,

Response from Dr. Wohl

I agree that the time has come to start HIV meds. The virus has wreaked a good bit of havoc with your immune system - likely getting your B cells to make antibodies against your own platelets.

Fight back! Start HIV meds and see if that helps. At the very least, your CD4 cell count, now at 35% of normal should pop up to levels you were meant to have.
