Ask the Experts about Choosing Your Meds
Do meds help with allergies?
Apr 19, 2008
I have been poz for about 1 year. I am not on meds yet. I have always had mild seasonal allergies but this year I am having a lot more trouble. I have heard that hiv can aggravate allergies. But does it get better when a person goes on meds? I would consider going on meds earlier than recommended if it could help. Thank you.

Thanks for your post.
Your summary about seasonal allergies is correct- namely that they tend to be more common and more severe among persons with untreated HIV. It's been our experience that treatment with antiretroviral medications tends to improve this. As such, if I have a patient whose sinus problems are significantly worse and don't respond to typical treatments, I'll offer HIV medications even when CD4 counts are above the usual thresholds.
