Dear Docs, I am a 37 yr. old male, HIV+ 10+yrs, whose doctor suspects that I have glomerulonephritis (Bright's disease-usually acquired from the streptococcal virus), a kidney disorder whereby the kidneys are inflammed and thus have trouble filtering out the protein particles from my system, and I am presenting a high level in my urine (2.5gm-the normal is 1.5mg.) What can you tell me about the treatment options for this condition? My doctor wants to do a kidney biopsy, and from what I have read about this ailment, unless there is blood in the urine (hematuria), edema, acute albuminuria, hypertension, or kidney lesions it can be treated with penicillin or sulfonamides? Is a biopsy really necessary? I do not have headache, fever, anorexia, nausea or vomiting and no facial puffiness. Signed, SCARED!

Response from Dr. Fisher

I'm not a nephrologist so I don't feel qualified to answer your questions. Make sure you do see a nephrologist and consider all options including biopsy. Alvan Fisher, M.D.
