| Diet & Lipodistrophy Jul 27, 2001 Hello, having to cope with lipodystrophy and excessive weight gain (went from 150 pounds to 190 pounds in two years (5'7"), buffalo hump, belly fat and all that jazz!), I will be meeting with a nutritionist to set up a diet and training program for weigh loss including BIA(GH didn't work for me). Is there any literature available to help setting up a diet program targeted to loose those extra pounds without jeopardizing the treatment (efavirenz, stavudine, lamivudine)? My gameplan would be to loose 40 pounds in one year. My doctor does not feel I should switch to other medication as the literature does not clearly identify causes and treatment for lipodistrophy. Thank you! |

Response from Dr. Dieterich
Actually, there is some data that switching off of D4T to either abacavir(Ziagen) or AZT can help your chlesterol and triglycerides, if they are elevated. That may be able to help some of the fat redistribution too. However it does sound like you should go on a severely fat restricted diet and an exercise program too to lose those 40 pounds. Lipodystrophy is not usually associated with weight gain, it is most often a weight-neutral process. DTD |
