Boiling Tap Water
May 29, 2000

I've heard that boiling normal tap water at a rolling boil for 20 minutes produces the same quality of water as expensive bottled water. Is this true?

Also, I have been looking at investing in a water filtration system to install on my kitchen faucet. Some of the cheaper models like Britta, etc. are more within my range. WHat are your recommendations on these and just how good are they?

Response from Dr. Fisher

You did not say where you live, but most tap water in the US is safe for people with HIV. Boiling is probably unnecessary but filtration can be important to remove dangerous parasites such as cryptosporidia. However I do not recommend that my patients routinely filter their tap water. This might be advisable if your T4 cells are very low (less than 50-100). I do not know which commercially available water filtration systems are adequate in filtering out these parasites...check the manufacturer's claims. Alvan Fisher, M.D.
