Lipofilling and Bioalkamid
Jun 24, 2004

I was infected in 1998 and started therapy right after with crix/d4t/3tc (3 years) switched to efv/d4t/3tc (1.5 years). Two years ago I stopped therapy due to lipo: I had a large belly and no more fat in my arms and legs and sunken cheeks. I could not sit on hard chairs because of the pain. I did solve some of my problems with a few cycles of anabolic steroids (combined with weight lifting, now I can sit comfortably and have nice muscular arms and legs). Even if it is 2 years that I do not take medications, I still have a bloated stomach and there is no sign that some fat is returning in my legs and arms. Anyhow arms and legs are big enough due to the anabolics and weight lifting. I had a lipofilling procedure for my face and I am quite happy with the results, very natural look, even if some areas are still somhow 'empty'. I did ask to my plastic surgeon about bioalkamid for a touch up in these areas but he is completely against non biodegradable filler. I do not want to go for new fill since this is not permanent. Is he correct in your opinion? Would you inject if needed a non biodegradable filler in your face? Are there any clinical data/ studies supporting the use and safety of bioalkamid?

Response from Dr. Moyle

Most of the data are anecdotal but there is one publication of 73 patients followed over 3 years Protopapa C, Sito G, Caporale D, Cammarota N.Bio-Alcamid in drug-induced lipodystrophy.J Cosmet Laser Ther. 2003 Dec;5(3-4):226-30

The substance is planning to be reviewed by the FDA. At present I see no particular contra-indication to its use. Although not biodegradeable it is at least partially removable

regards

Graeme Moyle
