|tests for lipoatrophy

regarding our little dispute over evidence of lipoatrophy as opposed to simply muscle wasting, when you say that this has been proven since there was noted decrease in fat under the skin in hiv patients, without a loss of muscle, were there any biopsies done before, during and after onset of diagnosed lipoatrophy in the limbs? because without a biopsy, you're guess is as good as mine, so to speak. and vise versa. see what i mean?
Response from Dr. Moyle
Yes, a serial biopsy study has been reported from a group in Western Australia at this year's lipodystrophy workshop in Paris. They showed evidence of progressive decline in the size of fat cells, the amount of mitochondrial DNA in the fat cells and an increase in fat cells death. The extent and severity of the changes correlated with observations by Dexa scanning of fat loss. The syndrome is a very real one of fat loss with relative preservation of muscle mass.
