| Steroid Usage Jul 30, 2003 I have been HIV positive since 1982. Currently on 3 part cocktail with excellent results -- undetectable and CD count above 1000. HOWEVER, I am experiencing lipoatrophy. To regain lost body mass, would it be safe to combine steroids and high-power drinks with exercise on my legs and arms? |

Response from Dr. Moyle
Lipoatrophy is not the loss of body mass but the loss or shrinkage of fat cells. Steroids caused further loss or shrinkage of fat cells in exchange for increase in muscle mass and therefore may make the appearance of peripheral lipoatrophy worse. I would suggest talking to your doctor about what options you may have with regards to treatment modifications rather than considering adding in drugs that may make things worse and could also cause considerable side-effects. Your dietician can advise on which diet may be best for you to regain any lost pounds. Best wishes Graeme Moyle |
