I have a diagnosis of lipodystrophy in the area of the neck, back and abdomen. I would like to have liposuction done. Where i can find a surgeon to perform this procedure and do you recommendend this for HIV patients.
Response from Ms. Fields-Gardner
If your diagnosis of lipodystrophy includes fat pads on the back, neck, and abdomen, then you are looking at a different circumstance than is usually seen in liposuction clinics. The fat accumulation is not purely a calorie issue and people who have had this surgery on their upper back have seen mixed results.
As for the belly, if it is really the type of fat that is seen in "lipodystrophy" it will not be readily available for liposuction because it is not just under the skin where liposuction takes place.
You will want to talk with your physician either way. Your physician may know of local surgeons who have experience with removing back and other under-the-skin fat pads. But, this problem will require more than surgery because it is likely to be hormonally driven.
