Do you know if any vitamins can slow AIDS down?
Response from Ms. Fields-Gardner
Vitamins and minerals are involved in many body processes, including immune function and maintaining body stores. The use of vitamin therapy to slow disease process is the topic of some (but very little at the moment) serious research. Most of the evidence for a role of these micronutrients is based on epidemiologic research where a group is observed and associations between dietary and supplemental intakes of nutrients are suggested, but not tested. This type of research opens the door to develop a question to investigate (such as, "Does selenium supplementation slow the progression of HIV-related disease?" which can then be tested. This type of research is quite difficult to do because there are so many other factors that affect outcome, like taking anti-HIV drugs.
So, I guess the answer is a bit cloudy. In general, we know that vitamins and minerals play an important role. What we don't know as clearly is what risks and benefits really are related to dietary and supplemental intake of these nutrients in HIV infection.
