scared now
Dec 12, 2003
I have a read a few articles now in this section about Kaletra and combivir and facial wasting, fat lose in areas , and fat gain in the stomach. I am 32..great shape..in the gym all the time. viral is 152,000 and tcell is 350. I started on kaletra and combivir 2 days ago and am now freaked out. Why would my doctor start me on this when I told him how important it is for me to continue to look good, normal, whatever. sorry for sounding so horrible but I truly feel that looking good and feeling good about your looks makes you feel good inside which is a great way to fight this.

Response from Dr. Moyle

Its a bit old fashioned to start on twice daily regimens especially with so many pills. Kaletra is one of the worst culprits for raising blood fats and combinations of AZT (in combivir) or d4T (wich you are not on) and most protease inhibitors (like Kaletra) are the regimens most associated with fat loss over time. A much simpler and as effective regimen with be one based on abacavir/3TC or Tenofovir/FTC and efavirenz. These once daily regimens are also the ones least associated with fat loss and a proven in people with high viral loads at treament commencement Regards
