BEST REGIMEN FOR WASTING
Jul 28, 2003
I am having a real problem with weight loss and bloating belly and no LBM. What is a better combo? Sustiva, Viread and Ziagen or Sustiva, Ziagen and Epivir? And which combo would work best with Megace? Megace you to fill me out all over, but now it doesn't work? DO I need to increase dosage? Thanks

Response from Dr. Moyle

Of the choices you offer I would probably go for abacavir, 3 TC, efavirenz. There are apparently no data and some concerns about the effectiveness of combining abacavir and tenofovir. Tenofovir, 3 TC and efavirenz would be another reasonable option. If you just starting HAART for the first time it may not need additional supplements to help you regain any weight loss.
One of the challenges of using Megace is that tends to cause fat again, and the fat tends to go to wherever that goes at your age! Megace also tends to affect male hormone levels and therefore it may be best to use this drug in combination with testosterone supplementation, such as with Androgel. This may well help the weight gain the more likely to be a mixture of lean body mass and fat.
I hope this helps
best wishes
Graeme Moyle
