Drink and Pill for Lipodystrophy - do they work? Can they work?
Jun 17, 2003

Recently attended a retreat where lots of wonderful information was tossed about with regards to lipodystrophy and one of the things that was discussed was a powder-drink, I believe called, "colosteromine"? What is this and does it work for anyone or is it like everything else and works only for certain people and certain body types? And again, what effect would glucotrol have on liposdystrophy, if any? Thanks, Jim

   Response from Dr. Moyle

Glucotrol (glipizide) is an antidiabetic agent that increases insulin output. It has not really been invetigated in lipodystrophy as there are no good theoretical reasons why it should help much. Increasing insulin levels can help some people gain weight. Other diabetic agents such as metformin and rosiglitazone which help fat cells respond better to insulin seem of greater interest. Cholestiramine binds cholesterol in the gut, reducing its absorption. Interactions with HIV drugs have not been tested and it is just possible that it could interfer with protease inhibitor absorption. Until these issues are sorted out it should not be used. I can see no reason why it would help body shape

Best Wishes

Graeme
