low down of fat recovery
May 17, 2004
Dear Dr Moyle
What is the low down on fat recovery? There seems to be conflicting opinions on it. What is the current data so far regarding treatment switches or drugs to avoid? Has fat actually recovered in patients?
Thanks
Thanks

Response from Dr. Moyle

It can recover. There are 3 studies which have shown fat recovery in persons switching from d4T or AZT to Abacavir where fat mass in the limbs recovered slowly (but surely) over time. No other treatments for lipodystrophy have shown limb fat recovery.
How long it takes for the recovery to become obvious or visible varies from person to person.
There have not been any studies to demonstrate fat recovery in the face as there are methodological problems in assessing facial fat. Anecdotally this too recovers, but perhaps more slowly than body fat.
I hope this settles the arguement!
regards
Graeme Moyle
