Ask the Experts about Lipodystrophy and Wasting

never heard of this
Feb 28, 2003

I have wasting but with no fatigue. I had fatigue during my acute infection, but now the fatigue has gone away and yet my wasting continues to get worse and worse. This is not due to decreased appetite or muscle atrophy. I lift weights and eat very well. My face wastes along with parts of my body I can't possibly work in the gym like my pelvis, elbows, jaw, ribs... etc. How could I be wasting with no fatigue or muscle soreness?

Response from Ms. Fields-Gardner

What you describe sounds like a type of wasting... but perhaps not of muscle tissues. Exercise can help by working all over the body ("systemically") to keep things that may cause such problems under control. Wasting, even muscle wasting, does not necessarily come with muscle soreness. Fatigue can be a later sign rather than an earlier one in many people.

So, first talk with your doctor to help you figure out what may be "wasting" -- fat or lean. Then determine what your risk factors are: lifestyle, aging, medications, and such. Then choose what things should be changed.

For facial wasting there has been a little bit of discussion about facial exercises (see link below). There are a number of other avenues to explore as well including medicines and facial surgery.
