Diet Therapy for Wasting
Jun 30, 2003

I am doing a project for nursing school that relates to wasting and diet. What type of type of diet is recommended for a 29 year old male with wasting syndrome?

So many answers, so little room! Because you are in nursing school and this is a forum for HIV care, I would recommend that you check out the "Core Curriculum" from the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) which will give you quite a bit of the latest info (just published this month!). The ISBN #: 0-7619-2777-8. Check out more on ANAC at the link below.

There is no specific "diet" for wasting syndrome. As with other problems that are more general, it is best to find out the problems and risk factors that may be involved with a wasting process and plan interventions and prevention strategies accordingly. Wasting can happen because of inadequate nutrient intake, excessive nutrient losses, and a host of metabolic issues (that are most important to fat wasting and muscle wasting).

Often, diet is supported by adjunctive therapies such as exercise and medications. Combo therapy is as important here as it is in controlling HIV.

Best wishes!
